By now, you have no doubt heard about the most recent strain of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that has spread fear across the globe. If all of the media coverage has your head spinning, worry not. Here at Huntington Lifestyle Partners, we have prepared some facts you need to know to stay informed and healthy.
FACTS
- A mask alone is not sufficient to protect you from the virus. The most effective way to stay safe is to wash your hands regularly, most importantly upon returning home. Additionally, sterilize any common contact surfaces.
- Symptoms include fever, dry cough, muscle pain, and shortness of breath. Note that these symptoms overlap with the common cold or flu. Just because you have these symptoms does not mean you have 2019-nCoV. These symptoms can appear between 2 to 14 days after exposure.
- The most important thing you can do to avoid infection is to regularly wash your hands, especially before touching your face. We also recommend using paper towels to turn off sinks and to open doors in public restrooms.
- People with compromised immune systems, the very old and very young, and those with diagnosed pre-existing conditions are most at risk of developing complications or severe symptoms.
WHAT NOW?
Approximately 13% of confirmed cases developed serious symptoms. It is generally understood that the reason some people become really sick (while others recover or only develop mild symptoms) is that the novel virus has stirred up an immune system storm in the body, particularly in the lungs. So, in addition to controlling the infection, we need to consider boosting our immune system.
Huntington Lifestyle Partners offers a FirstLine Therapy program, which can help you build your immune system up and keep it strong – the best part is, once you build those healthy habits, the odds of developing complications from 2019-nCoV (or any future disease) may stay very low! Building immunity is especially important even in the absence of the 2019-nCoV epidemic, as there are plenty of bacterial and viral threats during the winter season.
